Belts and hoses wear out faster than most mechanisms in your car. Watch for signs of damage and maintain recommended maintenance schedules. Otherwise, you'll find yourself sitting immobile in San Juan traffic, or worse.
Your timing belt is instrumental to crankshaft/camshaft operation. The process involves valves moving in synchronization with pistons. If this belt breaks, the engine goes kaput, followed by major damage. Listen for slapping noises. That's a clear indicator. The drive, or serpentine, belt powers the a/c compressor, cooling fan, pumps and more. A big job, and you can imagine what it means to your car if that device breaks. All belts should be part of routine checkups during oil changes.
Hoses are critical too. They maintain coolant connections throughout the car. Without them, there'll be problems with everything from radiators to the heating block. Acura of the Rio Grande Valley has seen even tiny cracks result in a hose bursting. Make sure hoses are inspected no less than twice a year.
