
It's not always easy to explain what is meant by horsepower, but most of us like to talk about it anyway. We know that the more horsepower we have in a vehicle, the better performance it will provide. What do we really mean when talking about this term?
Back in the 18th century when steam engines were being introduced, James Watt, an inventor and steam engine designer, just wanted to sell more of his engines. Knowing he had to devise a plan to impress potential customers with the amount of power they could produce, he came up with the word "horsepower" to describe how much work one steam engine could do.
